The usually choc-a-bloc bus parking lot at Makuhari Messe was deserted. There were no car company hoardings on the way to the Tokyo Motor Show venue either. Inside, the show was restricted to just three halls. There were no go-go girls in skimpy costumes dancing to loud techno beats. Missing in action were Ferrari and Lamborghini. No Jaguar or Aston Martin, either. Not even Volkswagen. The space normally occupied by the American giants was filled in with paintings by children – on an automotive theme, mind you.

DoT to impose Rs 132-cr penalty on telcos

The Department of Telecom (DoT) is understood to have decided to slap a total penalty of Rs 132 crore on some major telecom operators for not rolling out services on time after the award of licence and spectrum. The penalty, which will be in the form of liquidated damages (LDs), are for delays since 2005, for which show-cause notices had been issued earlier. - Airtel, RCom won"t raise SMS rates for New Year"s Eve - DoT to impose Rs 132 cr penalty on telcos - Experts divided over predatory pricing - 3G auction may start by Feb end or March 1st week - Reliance, Idea pulled up by ASCI for misleading ads - Defence Min will release more spectrum: DoT “As per the calculation, the revised LD amount is Rs 132 crore on Bharti Airtel (Rs 28.20 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 19.85 crore), Tata Teleservices (Rs 36.5 crore) and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (Rs 3.7 crore). The LD on Aircel is Rs 28.995 crore, while Vodafone Essar, MTNL, BSNL have not been slapped with any LD,” said an internal DoT note.
